VNUS Closure® (Radiofrequency Ablation)
Next to EVLT, the VNUS Closure® is the most recent development for the treatment of sapheno-femoral reflux (leaky valves in the groin). It is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia and is associated with minimal if any discomfort. As with the other treatment modalities for saphenous reflux disease, this procedure is only to treat the valvular problem and does not treat the visible varicose veins of the leg. Though the pressure in the varicose veins will lessen, the remaining varicose veins will still need to be treated by either compression sclerotherapy or ambulatory phlebectomy.
The preparation for Closure® and EVLT are similar and involve the identification and marking of the greater saphenous vein (the major surface vein where the valve is leaking) by ultrasound. A small sheath is placed through the skin by the knee and the Closure® device is introduced through the sheath and positioned at the level of the bad valve. Proper positioning of the device is confirmed by ultrasound. The Closure® device is heated to 85º C and then slowly withdrawn. Once the sheath and device are removed, compressive dressings are applied with a support stocking over the top of the dressings. The patient is rechecked at a time suggested by the treating physician and further treatment that may be needed may be discussed at that time.
We do not perform the Closure® procedure at The Vein Center but would be more than happy to refer you to a physician that does if you desire. They will be much more qualified to discuss the procedure in detail as well as answer any questions you have about the specifics of treatment.
