Microsurgery (Ambulatory Phlebectomy)
Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive, micro-surgical technique for removing larger reticular and varicose veins. Though small incisions are made in the skin, most do not require sutures to close and leave very small, scratch like scars if any at all.
The procedure is actually very simple, near painless, and cosmetically pleasing. Most cases will take anywhere from one to two hours to complete. The areas to be treated are injected with a local anesthetic and small incisions (1-3 mm.) are made adjacent to the vein to be removed. Using a specially designed hook, the vein is then gently extracted through the incision. Once the veins have been removed, the small incisions may be closed with sterile tape and compressive dressings are applied. The patient is asked to wear a gradient compression support stocking for a specified period of time and is able to return to work the day following the procedure. Post-operative pain is minimal and easily controlled with Ibuprofen. No other medications are needed. There will normally be some bruising of the leg which will resolve in 2-3 weeks.
Though, in most cases, compression sclerotherapy is still the treatment of choice, this technique can be a valuable tool for treatment of some patients. A physician will discuss with you the most appropriate treatment options in your particular case.
